As my big girl heads back to school today, starting 3rd grade, I like to take this opportunity to give myself a fresh start as well on new goals and projects.
I have always loved this time of year, and I get excited when the weekly ads start to have good deals on school supplies. Perhaps this stems from my first job at Target, at age 16, where one of my first tasks was setting out the back to school display. I would spend every day opening boxes of 10 cent notebooks in all the colors of the rainbow. As I’m currently stocking up for my kids (and myself) I am reminded of the quote from one of my favorite movies, You’ve Got Mail, where Joe writes to Kathleen: “Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.”
When my daughter attended her back to school conference with her teacher, she took all of her brand new supplies out of her new bag and unloaded them with care into her desk. I watched her line up all the pencils and crayons perfectly in her pencil box before she put them neatly on top of her new textbooks in her desk, ready to start the first day. Then this morning she was all dressed and ready to go in her new dress with her lunchbox packed way before it was time to leave. She couldn’t wait to reconnect with her friends and get started on everything that 3rd grade had to offer.
For me, the fun came in opening up my new pack of white board markers and writing out my color coordinated goals monthly goals. Add to that new highlighters in my pencil cup to check off my tasks on my daily to-do list. I spent the day planning and preparing to push my business to the next level and finish out 2015 strong.
We celebrated the end of the day by going out for ice cream, an annual tradition. How are you kicking off the new school year?
